"If your suitcase won't close, it might not be because you packed too much. It might be because you packed for every possible version of your trip instead of the one you're actually taking."
Can we talk for a minute?
Packing has become one of the most stressful parts of traveling, and it isn't because people don't know how to fold clothes.
It's because most of us pack with our emotions instead of our itinerary.
We pack for the "what ifs."
What if it gets cold?
What if we decide to go somewhere fancy?
What if I spill something?
What if I suddenly become the kind of person who wears heels on vacation?
Before you know it, you've packed three pairs of jeans for a five day Caribbean cruise and enough shoes to open your own department store.
Sound familiar?
You're not alone.
The good news is there's a better way.
One of the biggest mindset shifts we've made is this:
Pack for the vacation you've planned, not the vacation you're imagining.
Look at your itinerary.
What are you actually doing?
If you're spending five days at an all-inclusive resort, you probably don't need five evening outfits, four pairs of heels, hiking boots, and a rain jacket "just in case."
If you're taking a cruise, your days are already mapped out. You know when you'll be at sea, when you'll be in port, when formal night is, and when you'll be lounging by the pool.
Let your itinerary make the packing decisions.
When we pack, every single item has to answer one question:
"Why are you coming?"
If it doesn't have a clear purpose, it stays home.
That sounds simple, but it's a game changer.
Instead of throwing random pieces into your suitcase, start thinking in complete outfits.
Ask yourself:
Once those needs are covered, stop packing.
Everything else is usually "just in case."
Here's where most suitcases get into trouble.
Five black shirts.
Four pairs of sandals.
Three white cover-ups.
Two curling irons.
Multiple versions of the exact same thing.
You don't need backups for everything.
Choose your favorites and let them do the work.
The lighter your suitcase, the easier every part of your trip becomes, from checking in at the airport to lifting your bag into the overhead bin.
One of our favorite packing habits is creating outfits before anything goes into the suitcase.
Lay everything out.
Match shirts with bottoms.
Choose shoes that work with multiple outfits.
Stick with a color palette so pieces can mix and match.
When everything works together, you can pack fewer items while creating more looks.
That's packing smarter, not sacrificing style.
Let's have an honest conversation about shoes.
They take up space.
They add weight.
And most people never wear half the pairs they pack.
A good rule of thumb is to pack shoes with purpose.
Think about your itinerary.
You might need:
If your checked bag is delayed, your vacation doesn't have to be.
We've all packed things that never left the suitcase.
That outfit you just knew you'd wear.
Those shoes that matched exactly one dress.
The extra jacket "just in case."
Then you get home and realize you carried all that extra weight around for absolutely no reason.
Every trip teaches you something.
One of the biggest lessons we've learned is this:
Your suitcase should support your vacation, not complicate it.
Responsible adults don't try to prepare for every possible scenario.
They prepare for the most likely ones.
That doesn't mean underpacking.
It means packing with purpose.
Every item earns its place.
Every outfit has a plan.
Every inch of luggage works for you.
That's how you avoid overpacking without feeling like you've forgotten something.
Here's today's boarding pass:
The goal isn't to fit more into your suitcase.
The goal is to fit more joy into your trip.
The less time you spend dragging heavy luggage, digging through your suitcase, and wondering what to wear, the more time you have to enjoy where you are.
And isn't that the whole point?
Before your next trip:
✔ Pack by outfit instead of by clothing category.
✔ Choose a simple color palette.
✔ Wear your bulkiest shoes while traveling.
✔ Limit yourself to one "just in case" item.
✔ Leave a little room for souvenirs.
✔ Do a final review and remove three items before you zip your suitcase.
You'll probably never miss them.
How many outfits should I pack?
Pack for the number of days you'll be traveling, while choosing pieces that can mix and match. Your itinerary should determine what you bring.
Is it better to roll or fold clothes?
Both methods work. Rolling often saves space and can help reduce wrinkles for casual clothing, while structured garments may do better folded.
How do I keep from overpacking?
Plan complete outfits, stick to a color palette, and ask whether every item has a specific purpose on your trip.
What's the most commonly overpacked item?
Shoes. Most travelers pack more pairs than they actually wear.

They're simple tools, but they make a big difference from the moment you leave home until you return.
Packing isn't about squeezing as much as possible into a suitcase.
It's about making room for a better travel experience.

Your suitcase gets lighter.
Your airport experience gets easier.
Your hotel room stays more organized.
