You spend months planning your cruise. You compare itineraries, pick the perfect cabin, count down the days, and maybe even buy a few new outfits. Then embarkation day finally arrives.
You step onboard excited for an amazing vacation... and before the ship even leaves the port, you've already missed opportunities that could have made your cruise even better.
No, I'm not talking about forgetting sunscreen or packing too many shoes. (Although... guilty. 😄)
I'm talking about the little planning decisions that seem harmless but end up costing you time, money, or experiences you can't get back once you're sailing.
Ask me how I know.
After sailing Virgin Voyages ourselves, we realized the people having the smoothest vacations weren't necessarily the most experienced cruisers. They were simply the ones who knew a few things ahead of time.
And then there's Carl.
Carl figures he'll "just wing it." He'll book things later. He'll decide where to eat when he gets hungry. Surely there will be plenty of availability.
Bless his heart.
By the second day, Carl is wandering the ship asking, "Where are we eating tonight?" while everyone else is already enjoying dinner at one of the restaurants they reserved weeks ago.
Don't be Carl.

One of the biggest surprises for many first-time Virgin Voyages sailors is that some of your best decisions happen before you ever step onto the ship.
Think about it.
The restaurants everyone talks about?
Reservations.
The shore excursions you've been dreaming about?
Limited availability.
Special experiences?
Some book up quickly.
Waiting until you're onboard doesn't always mean you'll miss out, but it definitely means your options may be more limited.
A little planning gives you more freedom once you're onboard. Instead of spending your vacation trying to figure everything out, you get to spend it enjoying the experience.
That's exactly how we like to travel.
👉 The Only Cruise Packing System Responsible Adults Need
Before you even think about reservations, make sure you've packed like a pro. Here's the exact cruise packing system we use.

Here's another mistake we see.
People assume they need to buy every add-on they see.
Not on Virgin Voyages.
One of the reasons we enjoy sailing with Virgin is that so much is already included in your voyage fare.
Your restaurants.
Basic beverages.
Wi-Fi.
Fitness classes.
Gratuities.
Entertainment.
When travelers don't know what's already included, they sometimes spend money on things they didn't actually need.
Before purchasing extras, ask yourself one simple question:
Is this going to make our vacation better, or is it something we already have?
Sometimes the answer is yes.
Sometimes that money is better spent on an amazing excursion or a special celebration onboard.
Can you just walk into the restaurants on Virgin Voyages?
Sometimes, yes, but the most popular restaurants and dinner times often fill up. If you have your heart set on a specific dining experience, reserving ahead of time is the better choice.

Now don't misunderstand me.
I love having a plan.
James loves having a plan.
But we also leave room for surprises.
Some of our favorite memories happened because we slowed down long enough to enjoy the moment.
A conversation with another couple.
A beautiful sunset from the top deck.
An unexpected dessert we decided to try.
A live performance we almost walked past.
The goal isn't to schedule every minute.
The goal is to remove the stress so you have the freedom to enjoy the unexpected.
Airport blog.
Getting to your cruise stress-free starts before embarkation day. Here's the airport system we use every single trip.

One of my favorite parts of traveling is finding those little moments you can't plan. The photo you almost didn't stop to take. The quiet corner of the ship where you watch the ocean for a few minutes. The dessert you weren't going to order but are still thinking about months later.
Those moments happen because you're present, not because you're scrambling to figure out dinner reservations.

Do the important planning before you leave home.
Once you're onboard, stop checking boxes and start making memories.
You'll enjoy the vacation so much more.
Wait until embarkation day to look at restaurant reservations.
Then spend the rest of the week saying, "I wish we had known."
Let's avoid that.
Here are three simple ways to avoid wasting time and money on your next Virgin Voyages cruise:
You'll thank yourself later.

Photo Suggestion: The two of you smiling with the ship in the background before sailing.
This photo reminds me of that excitement you feel before a cruise begins. Everything is still ahead of you, and you can't wait to see what's in store. Looking back, I'm so glad we had taken care of the important details before we boarded because it allowed us to simply enjoy every moment from the very beginning.

Whether it's your first Virgin Voyages sailing or you're ready to book another one, we'd love to help you plan a cruise that's relaxed, fun, and free from those avoidable "Carl" moments.
At Branch Out Travel, we help you choose the right itinerary, answer your questions, and prepare for the little details that make a big difference.
You pack...we've got your back.
