Some carry more than 5,000 guests.

There are multiple restaurants.

Pools.

Theaters.

Coffee shops.

Spas.

Water slides.

Entertainment venues.

And all of it is spread across several decks.

If you expect to instantly know where everything is, you're setting yourself up for frustration.

Instead...

Expect to spend a little time getting familiar with your surroundings.

The goal isn't perfection.

Every cruise ship has one or two decks that connect almost everything.

Think of them as the ship's main streets.

You'll usually find restaurants, entertainment, shopping, guest services, and popular gathering spaces there.

As soon as you board, figure out which deck that is.

Once you know your "magic deck," moving around the ship becomes much easier because so many places connect from there.

​Instead of taking random elevators and hoping for the best, you'll always have a starting point.

One of the best things you can do on embarkation day is simply explore.

Before sail-away, take an hour to walk the ship.

Find:
*Your dining room
*The buffet
*Main theater
*Pool deck
*Coffee shop
*Guest Services
*Fitness center
*Spa
*Muster station
*Elevators closest to your cabin

Don't worry about remembering every detail.

You're creating familiarity.

​The next time you need one of those places, you'll already have a mental picture.

This simple trick saves so much time.

Every ship has three main sections:

Forward - the front of the ship.

Midship - the middle.

Aft - the back.

Your cabin location will be one of these.

Instead of memorizing every hallway, learn whether you're staying forward, midship, or aft.

Here's a little secret.

Sometimes the stairs are actually faster.

Especially if you're only going up or down a few decks.

Elevators can get crowded around meal times and after shows.

Taking the stairs often saves time, and it's a great excuse to balance out dessert.

No judgment here.

Hallways all look alike.

Instead of trying to memorize cabin numbers, memorize landmarks.

For example:

"The pizza place is beside the pool."

"The comedy club is near the casino."

"The coffee shop is across from Guest Services."

"The steakhouse is one deck above the atrium."

​Your brain remembers stories and landmarks much better than random numbers.

Every evening, your cruise line will provide the next day's activities.

Whether it's in the cruise app or a printed planner, don't wait until morning to read it.

Look through it the night before.

*Dinner reservations
*Excursions
*Trivia
*Live music
*Theme nights
*Character appearances (if applicable)

​Knowing your day ahead of time helps you move through the ship with confidence instead of constantly checking your phone.

This might be the easiest tip of all.

Cruise crew members answer navigation questions every single day.

You are not bothering them.

If you're looking for the theater...

Ask. Need the nearest elevator?

Ask. Trying to find a specialty restaurant?

Ask. It's much quicker than wandering in circles for twenty minutes.

We've watched people spend half the cruise trying to figure out where things are.

Someone misses a comedy show because they went to the wrong theater.

Another guest walks to the opposite end of the ship looking for breakfast.

Someone accidentally ends up on the crew-only hallway before realizing they made a wrong turn.

It happens.

But once you understand how cruise ships are organized, everything starts to click.
